IMATS NY :: Todo lo que debes saber!!! :: by Bea Palma
preguntará, ¿¿¿qué son los IMATS o International Make Up Artist Trade Show???
de mares de productos conocidos como otros nuevos, todos a precios full asequibles;
Nueva York (Abril), Londres (Junio), Vancouver (Julio), Toronto (Octubre) y
Sydney (Noviembre).
referentes a fórmulas,
emergentes o experimentados, puedan acceder a buenos productos a precios
experiencia,
porque por mi parte debo decir, que de seguro, IMATS, I’ll Be back!!!
:::::::::::::
Hello everyone. I know it has been a couple
of months since I went to the IMATS, but it has been very difficult for me to
dedicate the time I would like to in order to tell about my experience, from
assimilating the experience, trying out what I brought with me and how hard I
have had to work to pay for my new acquisitions (lol), time has flown by. No
doubt, so much anxiety and expectation to attend the event and also get to know
New York, came together as a spiral of emotions that took me, in the context of
a dream world for an architect, into a Make-up Artist’s paradise.
So without further ado and as a supplement
to the coverage of “Mujer” magazine of June 5th, I give you my IMATS
experience.
But more than one of you will ask, “What
are the IMATS or International Make-Up Artist Trade Show?” Well, basically it
is an event that lasts three days and covers everything related to the make-up
world. The lovers of this art, manufacturers and distributors, make-up
artists for theater, movies, television, fashion, editorial and red carpet, as
well as special effects, students and worldwide benchmark leaders, they gather
here to showcase, exchange and share their techniques, tips and products with the
visitors in an avalanche of inspiration and personal and professional growth. Covered
with live demonstrations, trend classes, backstage discussions, valuable
advises about state of the art techniques and how to achieve and maintain
success as a make-up artist. Apart from that, there were uncountable number of
known products as well as others new ones, all at fully affordable prices. Unfortunately
it was impossible to be present at all the demonstrations, stands and workshops
provided by IMATS; without a doubt, the event went by very quickly.
So much so, that during the first day,
exclusive entry for accredited make-up artists, which was not jam-packed as the
following days, I was only able to do a quick stop by less than two thirds of
all stands while trying not to miss what was happening around me. Anything you
could think of related to make-up, someone had it. It reminded me when I used
to make maquettes at the University of Chile in Architecture, that however far
fetched the work was, to find the appropriate tools always facilitated things
and permitted me to be more precise with the details in less time. If at any
moment I thought of not completely attending the event on all 3 days, after the
first view of what IMATS were all about, obviously I had to sacrifice myself
(yeah right) and return the 2 following days to
submerge and get soaked with this fascinating event.
I admit that I still had the intentions of
returning on Saturday for a couple of hours when I heard that Lisa Eldridge,
one of my favorite make-up artists, would give a speech and would sign her
book. But, after the marvelous discovery of the Australian make-up artist Rae
Morris on Friday, upon knowing that she would give a master class the following
day, obviously I would extend my stay at the event on Saturday. On the other
hand, the chance to be side-by-side with ‘rock stars’ of the world of make-up, like Russian Lana Chromium that would present her body-painting on Sunday or
Roque Cozzette that would teach us how to achieve a ‘symbiosis’ with the
photographer, as well as participate in a forum with other experts that would
give their advice on how to be successful as a make-up artist. This confirmed
the “obligation” I had to attend the event every day, cover each and every
stand and also see the contests and witness as many of the artists’
demonstrations and workshops from around the world.
I must confess I felt like an ambassador of
our media, so I gathered courage and was fortunate to be able to get close to
Michael Key, editor in chief of the magazine Make-Up Artist, founder of IMATS
and winner of 2 EMMY Awards. His vision to combine the exhibition of products,
demonstrations and education in charge of leaders of the industry, that he
shows in IMATS since 1997 as well as in his magazine, has as a goal to educate
and connect the make-up artists from around the world. Therefore, I obviously
took up the chance to tell him what we face and what we are doing in Chile. If
it is true that we are still far from the industry development seen in other
countries, I realized as I spoke to him of how well things are being done in
Chile and how the make-up field is being valued in this last decade and has
positioned itself as a profession as well as the great high standards of media
producers, professionals and photographers. It is not a minor thing to get to
speak with who has orchestrated and made something like IMATS, undoubtedly a committed
visionary and passionate about promoting, bringing value and professionalizing
this art.
To see all kinds of special effect
demonstrations live, simulating the human condition in various aspects, doesn’t
just show the quality and great amount of talent that we find in our field, but
also the work and dedication that there is behind each make-up and the history
that is trying to be told with this work.
The fact that IMATS exist and that the MK
MAG magazine has celebrated 20 years already, is a reflection to the world that
make-up is, has been and will always be present one way or another in many
aspects of daily life, from movies, photos, television, publicity, celebrations
like weddings and birthdays, even to ‘simply look pretty day to day’.
This promotional platform, meet and learn,
has had such success, acceptance, participation and transcendence within the
industry, it is how today IMATS are done six time a year covering cities like
Los Angeles (January), New York (April), London (June), Vancouver (July),
Toronto (October) and Sydney (November).
And it’s that each workshop, stand and of
course the mini touring museum, is a testimony of how the 3 areas of make-up, EFX,
social make-up and publicity make-up, can be present without competing,
complementing and supporting each other, and bespeaking of how the industry has
opened up to the needs, tolerance and acceptance where all styles embrace each
other and each one has its own niche.
The fact of being in a place where you can
see how others vibrate and have dedicated their lives to this profession, where
no one hesitates to stop and ask how you achieved a make-up and which stand or
brand is the product you are using, always in an atmosphere of fraternity,
without being stuck-up or judgmental, is priceless. (For everything else there
was my Visa... oops).
It is incredible that everything I’ve seen in
the industry over my working years, and obviously much more, was present at
this expo.
Regarding the Beauty industry, each brand
emphasized on its advancements regarding formulas, ingredients, colors and
processes like cruelty free or vegan as examples, and how these advances allow
a better texture, finish and gain new product followers, this together with different uses, combinations and applications of products already known, compliment the diverse sample. All kinds of exhibitors, specific, of certain niche, or of general
products, through live demonstrations showed the kindness of their brands.
As I said before, IMATS is an excellent
opportunity for new and experienced make-up artists to have access to good
products at reasonable prices, or to the Pro make-up lines of the exhibiting
brands, broadening the inspirational horizons beyond what is defined during
fashion weeks, because for the most part big brands associated to Fashion
Weeks, like MAC, NARS, URBAN, YSL, curiously were all non present at this
event. It is clear that their marketing follows a different path and they
invest in other types of events, perhaps much more massive and renowned.
On the other hand, with some winners of Oscar Awards, EMMY,
BAFTA and Saturn Awards, obviously the cutting edge in terms of special effects
make-up was present. With remarkable demonstrations such as the application of state-of-the-art
prosthesis that allow to have a zombie make-up in 2 hours, or to prepare an
actor’s bare torso in order to slit his throat and have him bleed to death.
These are some of the technological advances that surprise and are additionally
preparing this art for high definition (HD).
It is different to see a live presentation
from backstage and not only at the actor or final result. The entire team that
is behind everything and that make themselves known only through social media
as a primary and basic tool, leave behind that unreachable figure, replacing
such for the ones who work backstage, a pair, that present through his or her
experience and expertise, his or her work, new products or industry trends,
which to me, today reaches the public more closely.
Another aspect to emphasize is the
professionalism and work of the Make-Up Schools, everyday more globalized,
competent and demanding and due to the undeniable contribution from social
media they gain followers, applicants and promote this art. What was clearly
established in the “Battle of the Brushes”, competition that was done live and
that in this instance had as a theme “Circus/Carnival” on Saturday and “4
Decades of Star Wars” on Sunday, where students of various and prestigious schools
and universities competing for the glory, recognition and a $5,000.00 dollar
prize. What better incentive!!!
Without a doubt, to be a spectator of the
making, process, dedication and nervousness of each contestant prior to the
presentation was truly fun.
And it was the art-confidence of each
artist that flowed not only from the students but also was shown in each
demonstration throughout the IMATS.
To see how each exhibitor would give tips
with total honesty and encouragement, which materials to use, how looks are
achieved and techniques managed, and independently of brands or commitments,
each one of them would share their most professional intimate secrets, along with
their new techniques and adopted technologies, while they would answer
questions from the audience, generating this way rich instances for debate
instead of imposing or adopting anything. Instances where, regardless of
whether it came from the public or exhibitor, all could pitch in.
These were moments where any trace of
alleged egos magically disappeared and we were all in a state of growth,
learning and sharing knowledge, in a context of absolute liberty to express and
feel comfortable to show your art.
If it’s true that social media is an
excellent way to promote and a platform to show your work almost like a
personal experience, they put us in the spotlight and allows us to be
up-to-date; undoubtedly I recommend to all make-up artist, if they have the
chance, to live this kind of experience that not only provides you the
satisfaction of searching, investigating and discovering but also allows you to
buy products, update your knowledge, open your eyes to new things and get to
understand idiosyncrasies from other cultures and countries. But above all, it
enchants you all over again because this, our profession, is an art and it is
incredible how it evolves.
After this magnificent experience, in a city that has room for everything and so cosmopolitan like New York, it is clear to me among so many testimonies, that the key is not to gloat over, instead, you have to strive learn, read, search and always continue to give the best of yourself at work, because, success arrives when preparation crosses the path of opportunity and both happen at the same time. If you
are always preparing yourself, contributing at work and you are also passionate
for what you do, your chances grow.
I hope that these words and images have conveyed
what IMATS is all about, since it was very difficult to portray, in not very
few words and some minutes of video, my experience. Hoping I didn’t come short, with great pleasure I share, and, how each exhibitor said, "Believe in
yourself, in your art and if you can attend one of these, do it, live this enriching experience", because when
it comes to me I must say, IMATS, I’ll be back!!!
